This is a digital copy of a book that was preserved for generations on library shelves before it was carefully scanned by Google as part of a project

to make the world's books discoverable online.

It has survived long enough for the copyright to expire and the book to enter the public domain. A public domain book is one that was never subject

to copyright or whose legal copyright term has expired. Whether a book is in the public domain may vary country to country. Public domain books

are our gateways to the past, representing a wealth of history, culture and knowledge that's often difficult to discover.

Marks, notations and other maiginalia present in the original volume will appear in this file - a reminder of this book's long journey from the

publisher to a library and finally to you.

Usage guidelines

Google is proud to partner with libraries to digitize public domain materials and make them widely accessible. Public domain books belong to the
public and we are merely their custodians. Nevertheless, this work is expensive, so in order to keep providing tliis resource, we liave taken steps to
prevent abuse by commercial parties, including placing technical restrictions on automated querying.
We also ask that you:

+ Make non-commercial use of the files We designed Google Book Search for use by individuals, and we request that you use these files for
personal, non-commercial purposes.

+ Refrain fivm automated querying Do not send automated queries of any sort to Google's system: If you are conducting research on machine
translation, optical character recognition or other areas where access to a large amount of text is helpful, please contact us. We encourage the
use of public domain materials for these purposes and may be able to help.

+ Maintain attributionTht GoogXt "watermark" you see on each file is essential for in forming people about this project and helping them find
additional materials through Google Book Search. Please do not remove it.

+ Keep it legal Whatever your use, remember that you are responsible for ensuring that what you are doing is legal. Do not assume that just
because we believe a book is in the public domain for users in the United States, that the work is also in the public domain for users in other
countries. Whether a book is still in copyright varies from country to country, and we can't offer guidance on whether any specific use of
any specific book is allowed. Please do not assume that a book's appearance in Google Book Search means it can be used in any manner
anywhere in the world. Copyright infringement liabili^ can be quite severe.

About Google Book Search

AMICO • RDELI . VENPR4

In piirsuance of ^e plan adopted for an edition of the
West-Saxon Gospels and followed in the recent publica-
tion, in this series, of the first and fourth Gospels, the text
of the Gospel of St. Mark with all the variant readings of
the manuscripts is, for the present, as in the case of the Gos-
pel of St. Matthew, herewith put forth without Notes and
Glossary. The plan provides for first making accessible
in this form the entire text of the Version ; thereafter such
apparatus as may be demanded will be added in due time.
It can hardly be denied that inferences may be drawn
from the history of the study of the Version that point
clearly to hindrances that would have been removed by a
convenient and trustworthy edition of the text.

This edition follows the Corpus manuscript with ex-
actness, all deviations from it being indicated by italics,
which, when supplying omissions, are bracketed. The
corrected or rejected readings of this copy are, of course,
recorded among the variant readings. In each instance
of deviation, therefore, it can be seen at a glance just
what has been changed, and just what the other copies
may contain in support of Uie change. But the trans-
lator's method can be apprehended only by reading the
Version with the Vulgate in hand ; and the Vulgate (with
its variant readings) will also show the limits observed by
the editor in venturing upon emendations of the text.

I am indebted to Mr. Robert Lee Ramsay, Fellow in
the Johns Hopkins University (1904—5), for the efficient
Planner in which he has kindly assisted me in reading
the proofs of this volume.

THE TEXT

The text of the edition of the Gospels in West-Saxon of which
this volume is a part represents the copy of the Version that is pre-
served in MS. CXL of the Library of Corpus Christi College,
Cambridge ; the rubrics have been carried into the text from MS.

A. The variant readings of all the other surviving copies of the
Version (MSS. A, B, and C) are subjoined to the text (in MS.

B, the text from i, i to iv, 37 and from xvi, 14 to the end is in
the hand of a late restorer ; and in MS. C, because of injury by
fire, the text of this Gospd be^ns at vii, 22, and is thereafter
fragmentary). These variant readings are complete except for
the fbllovnng unimportant details : excluded are the variations in the
orthography of Al, Aivl^ and st (^/, Ay^ higf Ayg; Aivi, Awy, ^w/^,
Awyg; si, sy, sig, syg), and the mere interchange of/ and j^ in the
orthography of radical syllables (j bemg characteristically frequent
in MS. A). The 8cribe*s usual 'contractions* have been ex-
panded, and his occasional * accents * have been disregarded. Al-
together modem, and therefore independent of the ori^al, are the
punctuation of the text and the use of capitals ; and the quantity of
the vowels has been indicated in conformity to historic grammar.
The accepted divisions of chapter and verse have also been intro-
duced. When in respect of any other detail the text does not agree
with the oopy (MS. Corp.), italics and brackets have been used:
a word in italics either corrects the spelling or the grammar of the
copy, or it marks the reception of a word that differs from that of
the copy ; omisuons by the scribe of the copy have been supplied
in italics and bracketed. A dagger prefixed to a word marks the
place of a textual omission from the copy. In connection with
these typographical devices, the variant readings ^ve the complete
report required to show in what manner at any point the text has
been emended.
